I’ve been in the advocacy world for over 15 years. Throughout the highs and lows of successful advocacy campaigns, I’ve noticed a consistent trend: passion can lead to burnout if you’re not utilizing the right tools and skills to advocate for your cause.

Over the years, I’ve received a lot of questions and feedback regarding my work as an advocate. I’ve met so many passionate, cause-driven people who are eagerly looking for a way to channel that energy into a force for good. The challenge they face, is that they don’t know where to start, or they feel too intimidated to try.

This is why I’ve spent the past year pooling my skills, knowledge, and resources to create the Demystifying Advocacy Bootcamp! We launched our first session this summer, and it was a HUGE success!

This three-session intensive allowed participants to develop leadership skills, strategies, and begin their advocacy journey. Each week, we met at the United Way office in Rapid City, and each session provided our group with expert insights from leaders in the advocacy field. 

Participants gained field knowledge and had opportunities to engage in candid Q&A discussions with each speaker, as well as present their own advocacy pitch to the group for feedback!

We heard from Alan Solano (Monument Health), Sarah White (South Dakota Education Equity Coalition),  Lee Schoenbeck (Former state Senator), Kitty Kinsman (Former Lobbyist), and Nicole Urhe-Balk (2025 SD State Legislature).

Participants also had opportunities for relationship building, as we broke out into small groups to discuss advocacy goals and challenges. We could not be prouder of this group of new and growing advocates!
